At-Home Remedies for Braces Pain

For the most part, modern braces are pretty comfortable. When you first get braces, however, or have a wire tightening appointment, you may experience some pain and discomfort. Read on for some suggestions for remedies to relieve the pain at home.

  1. Ice
  2. One of the easiest ways to calm braces pain is to ice the affected area. Have an ice pack on hand, or use a bag of frozen veggies in a pinch, to bring down the swelling in that area. Hydrate with a nice glass of ice water for additional relief.

  3. Drug Store Finds
  4. Pick up an oral anesthetic to help numb the discomfort. With a clean finger, rub the gel onto the area that’s hurting. You should feel the pain grow duller. Alternatively, over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen can really bring down the pain associated with braces.

  5. Dental Wax
  6. If you’re dealing with pain from your lips and cheeks being cut up or irritated by your braces, wax can help. Your orthodontist may have sent you home with a pack of orthodontic wax. If not, go ahead and ask for some. The wax can be applied to the metal bracket, which creates a barrier between the poking metal and the inside of your cheek. Just don’t forget to take the wax off before you brush your teeth.

  7. Massage
  8. For tender gums, try rubbing them. A brief massage may relieve some of the pain in the area. You may find that rubbing an ice cube on the gums will help, too.
