What to Do If a Bracket Comes Loose Over the Holidays

December 16, 2021 3:25 am

Whether you’re traveling or taking time off and having loved ones visit you, we hope you have a merry holiday season! But what do you do if you have a loose bracket during the holiday season? This is an orthodontic emergency! If your bracket pops off while you’re eating or brushing your teeth, don’t panic. Follow these steps and give Meason Orthodontics a call as soon as possible.

Don’t Try to Fix It Yourself

First, don’t attempt to glue the bracket back on to your tooth. Your orthodontist uses special bonding materials that are safe for teeth and aren’t commercially available, so you run the risk of damaging your tooth if you try to do it yourself. Plus, you must have the correct bracket placement that only an orthodontist can determine.

Avoid Certain Foods

Don’t eat anything sticky, chewy, or hard because these foods can cause further complications to your braces. For example, avoid ice, candy, hard bread, corn on the cob, and biting into apples, plums, peaches, and pears.

Use Dental Wax

Your loose bracket may irritate your gums, cheeks, and lips. Apply a generous amount of dental wax to the problematic area to help ease any irritation and protect your sensitive soft tissues.
