Caring for Your Clear Aligners

February 10, 2020 10:11 pm

Advances in dental technology have revolutionized orthodontic treatments over the years. You don’t have to endure bulky wires and unwieldy brackets to achieve a straighter smile, even if you have issues with your bite. Clear aligners are a comfortable and discreet treatment option at our orthodontics office in Weatherford, TX.

You wear them for 20-22 hours a day and remove them while eating and cleaning your teeth. They don’t disrupt your appearance and are comfortable to wear due to their smooth plastic material.

Today, we want to share five tips and tricks for caring for your clear aligners!

  1. Rinse When You Remove
  2. Each time you remove your aligners, give them a quick rinse with cold or lukewarm water. This helps wash out any residue to keep them clean and clear throughout the day. Remember, you should always remove your aligners before you eat or drink anything other than water.

  3. Avoid Hot Water
  4. When you rinse your clear aligners, always avoid hot water. Your aligners are custom-fit to your smile, but hot water can warp the material and change its shape.

  5. Brush & Floss Before Replacing
  6. Before replacing your aligners, brush and floss your teeth. This helps ensure that your teeth are free from any food residue that could stain your clear aligners or lead to tooth decay.

  7. Clean Every Day
  8. Your aligners should be cleaned every day. But don’t use toothpaste to clean your clear aligners. Toothpaste is too abrasive for the aligners and can damage them by leaving tiny scratches that cloud the material and collect bacteria. Instead, reach for a clear unscented antibacterial liquid soap and/or soak your trays in denture cleaner, Retainer Brite®, or a mixture of one part white vinegar to three parts water.

  9. Store in a Safe Place
  10. When storing your aligners during meals and your oral hygiene routine, keep them in a safe place that is cool and dry to protect them from any accidental damage.

With the proper care, you can ensure that your aligners remain clear and comfortable as they gently shift your teeth. To ask our team any questions about clear aligners or to schedule your next appointment with Dr. Meason, contact our Weatherford orthodontics office today!
